New Jersey / New York BPI Satellite Clinic Celebrates 1st Anniversary

The first of the Nath BPI Satellite Clinics is about to celebrate its 1st anniversary.  "Consistent and timely follow-up is crucial for recovery,"  said Dr. Nath, Director of the new Nath Brachial Plexus Institute,  when asked why he decided to open up the satellite clinic in Morristown, New Jersey.  "The trip to Texas can be stressful for parents because it's usually associated with a surgery and can be disruptive to the family.  If I come to their geographical area, my patients get seen more often and issues that may arise can be attended to faster,"  he added.

The satellite clinic meets at the office of Dr. Trevor Desouza.  Over the years, Dr. Desouza impressed Dr. Nath with his masterful EMG testing and personal follow-up of his patients.  "Dr. Desouza is extremely committed to his patients.  It was this expertise and deep commitment that brought us together for this first bpi satellite clinic,"  said Dr. Nath.  Cindy Servello, a physical therapist who is knowledgeable in the area of  brachial plexus injuries, also attends each appointment at Dr. Desouza's office and offers her therapy perspective.

Many families find that one of the major benefits of coming to a local satellite clinic is that they can bring their therapist(s) with them to the appointment.  "Each patient's brachial plexus injury is so different.  If I can be present for Dr. Nath's evaluation of a patient and ask him questions, this opportunity can be invaluable in creating a patient's treatment plan and in maintaining everyone's peace of mind,"  said Mary, PT.

Another benefit of coming to a satellite clinic is the lifetime friendships that can form.  First and foremost, if the child gets to see his specialist more often, the bond of trust that is created may help the child (as they develop into a teenager) navigate some of the psycho-social issues during puberty.  Sometimes the doctor is the only person a teenager may feel comfortable with in discussing his brachial plexus injury, limitations in function, and pain or other symptoms that may arise.  The younger child can meet up with others who are the same age and who live in the same geographical location and learn that they are not alone in their differences.  Parents meet with other parents at the clinics and find much support in sharing with each other.  Adults who have brachial plexus injuries that come to clinic may meet their first "brachial plexus peer".

Families from New York and New Jersey frequent the Morristown bpi satellite clinic,  but families from further north and south attend as well.  A second bpi satellite clinic will open this October in the greater Philadelphia area, and a third bpi satellite clinic is in the works for Arizona.  Dr. Nath travels the nation throughout the year for the satellite clinics, symposiums, workshops, and family events.  He is a licensed physician and surgeon in all of the states that he visits.  Below is the schedule for Fall, 2004.  Please check the site often for future clinic and outreach program dates.
